Natural Toothpaste
Just as the gut needs a healthy microbiome, so also does the mouth. Our Natural Toothpaste can help your body build just such an oral environment.
How Our Natural Toothpaste Came to Be
Let me tell you the story of how our natural toothpaste was created! For most of my life, I had strong, healthy teeth. But as an adult, I needed some major dental work. That’s when I started to really research what goes into toothpaste and other oral care products. I’ve always believed that natural is best for our bodies because we’re made to heal ourselves—if we just let our bodies do their thing. But I never thought to question toothpaste… until now.
As I learned more, I discovered that many of the ingredients in regular toothpaste can actually be harmful to our bodies! Some ingredients can hurt us over time, and others just don’t do what we have been led to believe. Here are 7 ingredients you should avoid:
- Detergents (like Sodium Lauryl Sulfate – SLS): This ingredient is what makes toothpaste foam. It’s also found in shampoos, soaps, and even makeup. But here’s the thing: SLS isn’t meant for your mouth. While it’s okay on your skin for a short contact time, I found no references to it being tested to see if it’s safe to use in your mouth or swallow.
- Humectants (like Sorbitol and Glycerol): These sweet-tasting chemicals keep your toothpaste from drying out. But they can cause mild to severe stomach problems, weakness, dizziness, and even affect your immune system.
- Abrasives: Most toothpaste contains harsh abrasives that are petroleum and/or synthetic based and can wear down your tooth enamel. This could lead to sensitive teeth or even gum problems.
- Fluoride: While fluoride is commonly added to toothpaste to protect your teeth, recent research shows it might not be needed. In fact, it could be bad for human brain development.
- Triclosan: This chemical is a fully synthetic substance with but one use, to kill germs in toothpaste.
- Diethanolamine (DEA): A dangerous chemical found in antifreeze! It’s also linked to cancer.
- Parabens: These chemicals mimic estrogen in your body, which can cause hormone problems and even increase the risk of some cancers.
Why Natural Toothpaste Is Better
So, why is our natural toothpaste a better option? Modern toothpaste works against the healthy bacteria in your mouth, which is essential for overall health. Just like your gut needs healthy bacteria to digest food, your mouth needs its own healthy bacteria to protect your teeth and gums. Our natural toothpaste helps your mouth build a healthy microbiome with ingredients that work together:
- Baking Soda provides a gentle scrub for your teeth.
- Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) helps boost healthy bacteria and keeps your toothpaste fresh with its natural acidity.
- Coconut Oil is the perfect base, plus it has many benefits for your mouth, like:
- Killing harmful bacteria
- Preventing plaque and cavities
- Reducing bad breath
- Promoting gum health
- Strengthen tooth enamel
- Pulling toxins from gum tissues
- Reducing tooth sensitivity
- Promoting healing after dental procedures
- Natural whitening
- Soothes a dry mouth
Ingredients: Baking Soda, Organic Coconut Oil, Organic Apple Cider Vinegar with the Mother (Comes in a sealed 8 fl-oz jelly jar)
How to Use It
To use our toothpaste, just scoop out about a quarter teaspoon (about the size of your finger tip) and use it to brush your teeth. One jar can last for up to 180 brushes!
My Favorite Toothbrush
I also enjoy using EveEvo Bamboo Toothbrushes with charcoal-infused bristles. They’re soft enough to protect your gums but still get your teeth nice and clean. Plus, they’re eco-friendly by helping reduce plastic waste and inexpensive, which is a win for your pocketbook and the planet!
