Purpose: Why natural deodorant? Well, the answer lies in the amount of toxic crap contained within over-the-counter deodorants and the most common location used for its application – the armpits.  When you apply deodorant to your armpits, you are applying it the one location on your body with the greatest lymphatic system pump.  So whatever you apply, be it good or bad, will absorb and circulate through your whole body.  With that in mind, the below listed are some of the most common materials from modern deodorant that should be avoided…

  • Propylene Glycol – high risk of contact dermatitis (a rash and itchiness). In large quantities, propylene glycol has been linked to damage of the central nervous system, liver and heart.
  • Synthetic Fragrance – the term “fragrance” on an ingredient label is a generic term used for over 3,000 chemicals. The biggest problem in all of this is that the term “fragrance” can legally be used on the ingredients list instead of the exact chemicals that are used within the product.
    • 17% of these chemicals scored a moderate hazardous score.
    • 5% of these chemicals scored a high hazardous rating.
    • ~1% (25 chemicals) scored a rating of 10 – the highest and most concerning score.
  • Aluminum – aluminum salts are in most antiperspirant acting deodorants, but here is what has been shown through medical studies…
  • In mice, exposure to aluminum compounds led to the development of large metastatic tumors in their breast tissue.
  • In woman who used aluminum containing antiperspirants and deodorants, both a higher rate of aluminum in their breast tissue and an increased rate of breast cancer were noted.
  • Triclosan – an antibacterial chemical and synthetic preservative. This chemical was banned in 2016 for causing hormonal imbalance issues and bacterial resistance.
  • Phthalates – these chemicals are related to endocrine disruption, risk of birth defects, reproductive toxicity, and cancer. They were banned in Europe as of 2020 but are still allowed in the United States.
  • Diethanolamine – aka DEA is a known carcinogen. This chemical can be disguised as a number of different names (hit the link to the above article for the list of alternate names).
  • Butane – found in spray on or aerosol deodorants and antiperspirants and are known carcinogens leading to specifically leukemia and other blood cancers.
  • Parabens – this chemical has been shown to mimic estrogen in the body when we are exposed to it and causes reproductive issues in both men and women and increases the risk of certain cancers.
